Abortion in America: 44 Years On

January 22, 2017, marked the 44th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision.

While abortion advocacy groups will be celebrating this wickedness, those of us who embrace the truth about abortion will be mourning the loss of countless millions of precious lives. Because of that fateful day, millions of America’s sons and daughters will never see the light of day.

Those of us who escaped the abortionist’s knife have a unique, God-given opportunity to speak out on behalf of our murdered peers. Christian pro-lifers must commit to an even more tireless activism on behalf of the unborn. Driven by the strength of Biblical conviction, we must continue to love the least among us. If abortion is to ever be ended, our fellow Americans need to be exposed to the brutal aftermath of this injustice.

Politicians As Husbands: Why Marital Fidelity Means So Much

We live in an age of sexual scandals. It seems almost every area of society is marked by the stench of lies and infidelity. It’s not that more scandalous activity is occurring than did in the past (Ecc. 1:9), but there is little doubt that in the Internet era such scandals are far more likely to be exposed.

Perhaps no other realm is more infamous and more despised for its sexual hypocrisy than that of politics. The sexual integrity of many of our nation’s politicians has been compromised. And yet many of them still hold their political offices; some even seek higher ones.

Many evangelical Christians are now wondering whether a politician’s sexual history should affect their ballot box decision. Should such scandals matter to Christians seeking to vote in a way that is faithful to Scripture and glorifying to God?

The Postmodern Worldview Is Rampant Among Young Christians

Studies indicate that many of today’s young people have little to no desire to adopt and embrace the faith of their parents. As a result, many of these same young people are also avoiding the political battles of their parents generation. They are increasingly apathetic toward politicians who campaign on hot-button cultural issues, especially when those politicians are not living consistently with their public personas. Young people are fleeing from the candidates they perceive as religious hypocrites.

However, the dwindling number of religious youths hasn’t been directly caused by hypocritical politicians. There is another, greater reason for the youth exodus from churches, namely postmodernism and a retreat from historical orthodoxy and Scriptural truth.

God Often Displays His Glory In Human Physical Defects

Sadly, children born with physical defects make some people uncomfortable. Even more heartbreaking is the reality that this discomfort often turns to disgust and drives people to abort/murder their innocent children on account of physical problems. However, this idea that some people are lesser because they have physical deformities is a lie refuted by Jesus Christ himself. In John 9, we learn of a blind man who Jesus healed, but not before addressing His disciples’ mistaken idea that the man was blind because he or his parents had sinned:

Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.”  (John 9:1-3, NKJV)

Through these words, Jesus informed his followers that not all physical ailments are punishments from God. Rather, he taught them that physical disabilities are often used by God as amplifiers for His glory (John 9:3).

Keep Fighting The Pro-Life Fight

Studies continue to show that the tide of public opinion is turning against abortion. In that sense, pro-lifers are steadily winning the fight as more Americans recognize the evil of abortion. But in another sense, pro-lifers lose the fight each and every time an innocent child is murdered.

Pro-life activists are selfless and courageous people. They possess the strength of conviction needed to boldly stand against the American abortion juggernaut on behalf of the voiceless unborn. Their stance against the prevailing tide of murderous injustice has doubtless served to ignite a movement that, Lord willing, will continue to grow and expand until those unborn humans who are the most weak and vulnerable among us are finally valued and protected by law.

Why Adoption is Pro-Life and Pro-Gospel

Many of us Christians consider ourselves to be 100% pro-life. We affirm that every human possesses the image of God from the moment of conception, a reality that makes abortion unthinkable in any circumstance. However, being 100% pro-life requires more than our opposition to surgical and chemical abortion. Convincing a pregnant mother to bear her child instead of opting to abort is not the end of being pro-life. Being 100% pro-life means striving to protect the innocent inside and outside of the womb. It means following through, nurturing life from conception to natural death.

The Morning-After Pill And Abortion

The Morning-after Abortion Pill (MAP), which is commonly referred to by pro-abortion activists as a so-called “emergency contraception” drug, is actually a high dosage of hormones ordinarily found in physician-prescribed “birth control” pills. According to documentation from manufacturers of the MAP, the pill must be taken within 72 hours after sexual intercourse to be effective. While the MAP’s primary purpose is to prevent ovulation, it is also designed to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg when taken AFTER conception, thereby causing some chemical abortions.

3 REASONS TO OPPOSE THE ‘MORNING-AFTER’ ABORTION PILL:

REASON 1: Because the MAP destroys tiny human lives

Even though the primary purpose of the MAP is to prevent conception by preventing ovulation, a secondary effect of the drug is to prevent an already-fertilized egg from attaching itself to the uterine wall. This secondary effect constitutes an abortion; it is the destruction of a tiny human life. Proponents often claim that such instances are rare. However, this claim is impossible to prove. Besides, even a handful of secondary-effect abortions occurring are unacceptable.

The general purpose of the MAP is to create a hormonal stimulation in the woman’s body that is similar to that of a natural pregnancy. The MAP operates in three possible ways:
(a.) It can delay or stop the release of an egg (ovulation).

(b.) It can prevent the sperm from fertilizing an egg by thickening the cervical mucous.

(c.) It can decrease the thickness the uterine lining, preventing a fertilized egg (embryo) from implanting in the uterus.

If the first two functions fail, then ovulation occurs and the egg becomes fertilized by the sperm, forming an embryo. However, the MAP slows the movement of the fertilized egg through the Fallopian tube. Meanwhile, the anti-implantation effect of the MAP will cause the endometrial wall to thin and shrivel, thereby making the uterus very hostile to the newly formed human life. The end result is the inability of the embryo to implant in the uterus, resulting in the bodily rejection and expulsion of the new human life. One study showed this abortifacient effect of the pill is “probably the main mechanism of action of the morning after pill.” According to researcher Dr. Walter Larimore, “endometrial thickness is related to the functional receptivity of the endometrium. When the endometrial lining becomes too thin, then implantation does not occur.”

Although abortion activists argue that the MAP will not terminate a pregnancy already in progress, their definition of ‘pregnancy’ is a deliberate deception. The start of a pregnancy is defined as the union of an egg and a sperm (known as conception), resulting in the creation of a new human life. In every way, the union of these two elements marks the creation of a new human life. Therefore, the MAP does cause abortions to pregnancies already in progress.

In an obvious attempt to make the use of abortifacient drugs like the MAP more acceptable, abortion activists and pharmaceutical companies are waging a misinformation campaign to redefine the meaning of “pregnancy.” As a result, they have succeeded in convincing millions of the lie that a pregnancy begins at the point when the fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus, rather than the at the moment the sperm fertilizes the egg. Dr. Joseph Stanford, a professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine, calls this a “deliberate redefinition.” Stanford, who was one of four dissenters on the FDA advisory board that approved the Plan B pill for over-the-counter distribution, argues that the pill does act as an abortifacient because of its post-fertilization effect on the uterus. One organization propagating the false definition of pregnancy is the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). According to the ACOG:

For a woman to become pregnant, a series of events must happen over a period of about a week and a half. All of the following events must occur:
1) She must ovulate.

2) Her egg must be fertilized by male sperm.

3) The fertilized egg must implant itself into the lining of her uterus.

The sperm can reach a woman’s Fallopian tubes roughly 10 minutes after sexual intercourse is completed. Since the egg has a viability of about 24 hours, the sperm must travel up the Fallopian tubes to fertilize the egg within that period. However, since sperm are viable for a period of 3 to 7 days, pregnancy may occur if sexual intercourse occurs a few days before the release of the egg (ovulation).

Obviously, the MAP will only act to stop the release of the egg if it is taken before ovulation occurs. However, since the MAP is marketed to women who believe that they may have already ovulated, the MAP serves as an abortion drug far more often than the manufacturers will admit. The result of taking the MAP after ovulation is the hardening of the uterine wall so that the new zygote will be discharged from the uterus due to inability to implant. This is chemical abortion.

REASON 2: Because easy access to the MAP promotes promiscuity, yet the MAP offers no protection from STD’s

The ‘freedom from consequences’ that the MAP allows is a dangerous ‘freedom.’ Although the MAP does provide an ‘easy’ abortion for many women, it in no way prevents the user from contracting sexually transmitted diseases. The perceived lack of consequences will contribute to an even higher STD rate. A recent study in the United Kingdom found that “recent increases in the number of youth family planning clinic sessions had little overall impact on teenage pregnancy rates” and “led to significantly higher rates of diagnoses of STDs amongst teenagers.” The study also found that the “shift towards greater promotion of emergency birth control” has “worsened the impact on [STD] rates since 2000.”

It seems as though abortion activists would like nothing more than to promote the MAP as a ‘contraceptive.’ Their success in convincing people that a pregnancy begins at implantation instead of conception leads to the removal of moral responsibility from women who, if they were aware of the MAP being an abortifacient, would refrain from using it.

The MAP does nothing to alleviate the root problem of promiscuity. Rather, by offering a so-called “easy” option to shirk the consequences of non-marital sex, this self-serve abortifacient only encourages people to become more sexually active with more partners. The rise in the acceptance of casual sex is evidenced by the name of the pill. “Morning-after” implies that aborting a baby is no big deal, like brushing one’s teeth or taking a shower. The MAP just adds one more item to the “morning-after” to-do list. With a misnomer like “emergency contraceptive pill,” its name draws attention away from parental responsibility, abstinence, and self-control; the only “emergency” that the MAP is named for is the ‘hassle’ of having a baby.

REASON 3: Because the MAP presents a dangerous health risk to women

High dosages of hormones interfere with the natural menstrual cycle and can often cause intense discomfort and pain. Common side effects for women who take the MAP are nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, abnormal bleeding, headaches, and/or dizziness. However, some women have also experienced more serious side effects that include severe abdominal pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headaches, severe leg or arm pain, and/or eye problems. The MAP could also be a danger to women with existing medical problems such as a past heart attack or stroke, breast or genital cancers, liver cancer, and/or blood clots in the lungs or legs.

Manufacturers have reduced the hormone content of oral contraceptives due to serious side effects and health risks. Now women are being encouraged to use these same pills, in multiple doses, as post-coital “contraception.” The potential long-term impact of these high hormone doses, especially when used repeatedly, is worrisome and not being adequately addressed.

Abortion advocates falsely claim that the MAP is the safest drug of its kind on the market. However, there is a lack of scientific evidence regarding the safety of the MAP. Since serious side effects don’t always immediately manifest themselves after taking pharmaceutical drugs, a high-dosage chemical drug like the MAP should not be used. In other words, just because women don’t immediately die after taking the MAP doesn’t validate the claim that the MAP is safe. It is not known whether the large amounts of chemicals in the MAP cause permanent damage to a woman’s fertility or cause certain diseases such as cancer to develop over time. Even though the MAP cannot abort a baby that has already been implanted in the uterus, the effect of the MAP’s dangerously large dosage of hormones on that baby are not yet known. The over-the-counter status of Plan B, a popular “emergency contraceptive” pill, communicates the false impression to women that the pill is safe to use, even on a regular basis, as if it were as harmless as cough medicine. The fact is, to date, there is no scientific study proving the maximum safe dosage for levornorgestrel, the active chemical in Plan B.

Because there is a lack of data from scientific studies concerning the maximum safe dosage for this drug, as well as the unknown side effects resulting from long-term, repeated usage of the MAP, its use should be opposed. However, studies have linked long-term usage of other oral contraceptives containing smaller doses of chemicals with life-threatening conditions such as heart attack, certain cancers, and blood clots. How much more dangerous is the high-dosage MAP?

CONCLUSION:

Human life begins at conception, which is the moment a sperm and egg unite to form an embryo. Since life begins at conception, it is wrong to purposefully prevent the continued existence of a baby at any stage of development. By design, the Morning-after Abortion Pill often executes a chemically-induced abortion by preventing embryos from implanting in the mother’s uterine wall. Therefore, the Morning-after Abortion Pill must be opposed as a matter of personal, corporate and public policy.

Beyond its abortifactient nature, there are health implications for women who take the MAP which alone merit opposing its use: the increased potential for the transmission of STD’s, the obvious consequences of such an intense and immediate hormone treatment, and the lack of controlled studies regarding the safety of the MAP’s long term use.

Scientist: Unborn Children Begin Learning in the Womb

In a fascinating new opinion piece on CNN.com, a scientist recounts her study and exploration of a relatively recent discovery regarding child development in the womb. Scientist and author Annie Murphy Paul wrote the article about a new scientific field known as “fetal origins.” Many scientists are coming to the groundbreaking realization that “learning starts much earlier than many of us would have imagined: in the womb.”

According to the author:

The fetus, we now know, is not an inert blob, but an active and dynamic creature, responding and adapting as it readies itself for life in the particular world it will soon enter. The pregnant woman is neither a passive incubator nor a source of always-imminent harm to her fetus, but a powerful and often positive influence on her child even before it’s born. And pregnancy is not a nine-month wait for the big event of birth, but a crucial period unto itself.

Make no mistake, this is a big deal.

Down Syndrome and the Immorality of Eugenics

An article in the New York Post, entitled “The End of Down Syndrome,” details a new type of scientific test that can detect Down Syndrome in unborn children. However, based on the article’s shocking implications, it would be more aptly titled “The End of Down Syndrome Children.” Though the article’s original title seems to promise a cure to the genetic disorder, the piece instead delivers a look at our culture’s obsession with perfection and our willingness to kill for it.
